KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced today that the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) has been awarded host conference status for the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship.

Having declared participation in NAIA Division I men's and women's basketball in early May, the HAAC receives two automatic berths given to any conference with ten or more member institutions. Host conference status awards the HAAC one additional host berth into the oldest national collegiate tournament in any sport dating back to 1937. The NAIA and HAAC officials will meet to finalize the length of the host berth agreement and determine the HAAC's role in the local organizing committee based on this arrangement in the near future.

Jackson, Tenn. - History was not on its side, but second-seeded Vanguard (Calif.) University became the NAIA's first-ever Division I Women's Basketball National Champion from the state of California, defeating sixth-seeded Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University, 72-59, in Tuesday's national title game.

"The first thing I thought about when we won tonight was how many phone calls I got today from all of our past players, even the players we brought out for our program's first national tournament (in 1998)," said Vanguard head coach Russ Davis, the 2008 NAIA Coach of the Year. "This win was special for all the players who had been here before and last year's seniors, because they built this program up to the point where we could get to this point where we could win a national championship."

JACKSON, Tenn. - The No. 2 seeded Vanguard (Calif.) University Lions advanced to play in their first NAIA National Title game after a 74-72 win over No. 1 seed, and previously unbeaten Union (Tenn.) University. Vanguard's Melissa Cook recorded the game-winner on a driving lay-up six seconds left to break a 72-72 tie.

Vanguard's appearance in the title game also marks the first time a team from the state of California has ever played for an NAIA title.

Vanguard opened the game with six straight points on back-to-back three pointers from Lauren Gregory. Union responded with three straight field goals to tie the game at 6-6. However, Vanguard controlled the lead for the remainder of the half. The Lions stretched the lead to up to 10 points on three different occasions, with the latest coming 34-24 with 8:09 left in the first half. Union rallied to cut the Vanguard lead down to five points, 40-35, but failed to score on three straight possessions with a chance to get closer. Vanguard went back up by seven points, but a three pointer from Union's Jessica Graves with 17 seconds left in the half got Union to within four points at the half, 42-38.

JACKSON, Tenn. - Sixth-seeded Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University extended its deepest national tournament run all the way to the program's first-ever NAIA title game with a 69-59 victory over TranSouth Athletic Conference rival Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University in the semifinals of the 28th Annual NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship.

"Before the season I said this might be our most talented team," said Trevecca Nazarene head coach Gary Van Atta. "Not many people believed me and maybe not even the team. They do now because this team has worked hard and overcome some tough losses against good teams early in the season. We have played our best defense of the season this week and it has made a difference."

Two sets of back-to-back three-pointers helped lift the Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene to the victory. Freshman forward K.C. JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union (Tenn.) University Lady Bulldogs, the No. 1 overall seed in the 28th Annual NAIA DI Women's Basketball National Championships, remained perfect on the season with an 82-57 win over No. 3 seed Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) College. The win for Union advances them to their fourth straight semifinal round and ninth semifinal in program history.

Union has now won 16 of their last 17 national tournament games over the past four seasons, and has done so at a clip of 18.4 points per game. In this year's tournament, the 35-0 Union Lady Bulldogs have won their three games by 23.7 points per game.

Union scored first in the game to take a 2-0 lead on a basket from sophomore Kaitlin Dudley. Lewis-Clark State quickly answered with four straight points to take a 4-2 lead. The win was the 600th career victory for Freed-Hardeman head coach Dale Neal, who has led the Lady Lions to 366 wins in his 14 seasons with the program.
