The #14 University of the Cumberlands (7-1; 0-0) Men's Basketball team traveled to Frankfort, KY to participate in the Mid-South Conference Challenge this past weekend winning both games. In Cumberlands first game, the Patriots avenged a loss from last week by defeating Mid-Continent University, 62-54. Then on Saturday, Cumberlands played the #1 team in the nation, Robert Morris College, and won 64-48.

The Patriots used an 11-3 run to open the second half and never trailed the rest of the way to beat Mid-Continent (Ky.) University (MCU) 62-54 in Friday's game.

The Patriots stretched their lead to as many as 13 points (52-39) in the second half before MCU made one final run closing to 52-48 with 2:14 left. But Cumberlands answered with six straight points to push the lead back to double digits and the Cougars never threatened again en route to the win.

Both teams struggled from the field in the defensive struggle. The Patriots shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) while Mid-Continent managed to make just 33.3 percent (20-of-60) of its shots.

Chad Byron (Louisville, KY) led the Patriots with 16 points. Bernard Cherry (Bronx, NY) added nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Patriots, in the history of their famed basketball program, before Saturday had only defeated a # 1 ranked team once, however, it was time to re-write the record books as the Patriots defeated #1 Robert Morris 64-48 on Saturday.

The Patriots scored 13 of the first 15 points of the second half and never looked back en route to a 64-48 win over top-ranked Robert Morris University.

The Patriots (8-1) defense limited Robert Morris to just 36 percent (18-of-50) shooting from the field, while the Cumberlands offense shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) from the field. Cumberlands also dominated the glass as well out-rebounding the Eagles 35-20.

Brandon Russ (Cincinnati, OH) finished with a team-high 13 points in the win for the Patriots. Anthony Snell (Jonesboro, GA) added 11.

The Patriots will be back in action on Monday, December 7, 2009 as they host Virginia Intermont. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM
