JACKSON, Tenn. – (Box Score) Vanguard (Calif.) University survived an upset bid from five-seed Bethel (Tenn.) University 75-69 in overtime in the second round of the 2010 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship. The Lions, a one-seed in this week's tournament, will be making their eighth straight NAIA quarterfinal appearance.
Bethel's Kashundria Berry sent the game to overtime with a driving layup with three seconds left in regulation. However, Vanguard outscored Bethel 12-6 in the overtime period to advance.
Vanguard scored the game's first eight points and led 12-2 at the 14:09 mark. However, Bethel answered with a 13-0 run to take a 15-12 lead at the 9:17 mark. Bethel continued to push as they outscored Vanguard 29-9 over the final 14 minutes of the first half to take a 31-21 halftime lead. Bethel held their largest lead of the half, at 31-19.
In the second half, Vanguard used four straight turnovers by Bethel in their first four possessions to cut the lead down to 31-27 in just over a minute of play. Over the first 11 minutes of the second half, the Lions outscored Bethel 29-8 to take their largest lead of 11 points, 50-39.
Bethel slowly chipped away, but with 57 seconds left, the Lady Wildcats still trailed 63-58. Bethel's Tristian Johnson drained a three pointer to cut the lead down to 63-61 with 43 seconds left. Johnson finished with a game-high 27 points, including 18 in the second half and overtime. Following a Vanguard turnover, Bethel had the ball back with 19 seconds on the clock. Berry's shot in the paint dropped in to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, the two teams swapped baskets before Vanguard scored eight straight points, including a three pointer and two made free throws from Jaclyn Blied to seal the win. Vanguard led by as many as eight in overtime before taking the 75-69 win.
Vanguard was led with five players in double figures. Rachel Copeland and Bridgette Reyes scored 14 points each. Blied added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Diana Neves and Sarah Boyd scored 13 and 11 points respectively. Vanguard shot just 39 percent from the field, but did make 5-of-15 three pointers (33%).
Bethel was led by Johnson's 27 points. Three other Lady Wildcat players scored in double figures, including two with double-doubles. Nina Djokovic scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Teena Carter scored 14 points and recorded 13 rebounds. Berry added 14 points in the loss.
Vanguard (27-2) advances to the quarterfinals to face Lee (Tenn.) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Bethel ends their season at 22-11.
