This year's field is stacked with a lot of talent including the possibility of having two teams in the national championship with perfect records. Morningside is currently 33-0 while Shawnee State is 30-0. Both teams have won championships in Sioux City with Morningside having their most recent title in 2005 while Shawnee won it all in 1999.
College of the Ozarks and Northwestern have also been two of the more dominating teams in tournament history with this year looking like no exception. Davenport appears to be a relative newcomer to the top of the NAIA and a run in this season's tourney might boost them to an elite status.
The Morningside Bracket: There is little doubt that Morningside is the favorite in this bracket. Kansas Wesleyan draws the #2 seed but many would argue Cedarville, Bethel or Black Hills State might be the tougher matchup for the Mustangs.
Upset Alert: Aquinas over Kansas Wesleyan. While it is highly unlikely it is also the only game in this bracket I would see as an upset. Maine-Fort Kent has no shot at an upset and the others are all evenly matched.
Cinderella: Cedarville has had some tournament magic through the years and it would make for quite a story of the Yellow Jackets were to defeat Morningside to give the Mustangs their only loss of the season.
Champion: It is tough to find someone in this bracket that could upset Morningside.
The Davenport Bracket: This is the best season ever for Davenport basketball and the Panthers are hoping to finish it off with a national title. They have a very tough bracket with Northwestern, Sterling, Huntington and Jamestown all with the ability to win this group.
Upset Alert: Likely a second round game will be the upset. Watch for the winner of Huntington and Jamestown to give DU all they have and push for the upset.
Cinderella: Not many slippers in this bracket. I'll go ahead and say IU-Southeast since they have shown they can play with some pretty decent teams but I do not think we'll see a Cinderella in this group.
Champion: I think someone beats DU and gets to the semifinal to play Morningside. I'm picking Northwestern in this bracket.
The Ozarks Bracket: Ozarks has a tough road in this bracket. They will likely get out of the first round fairly easily but after that the remaining field might be the toughest task the Bobcats have had to face to make it to a semifinal. Dickinson State is a good #2 seed but I think outside of Ozarks this bracket is up for grabs.
Upset Alert: Ohio Dominican over Dickinson State. ODU has been to the dance before and they have had a very tough schedule this year. Don't be surprised to see the Panthers get the win over the Bluehawks.
Cinderella: Indiana Wesleyan. Steve Brooks has won a national title and his team this season has been pretty steady. Their system is conducive to being successful at the national tourney.
Champion: Ozarks, but I don't say that with much confidence. I think COO is capable of winning the whole thing, but they will not have any breaks once they get out of the first round.
The Shawnee State Bracket: The Bears have been one of the best in the NAIA all year, now they have to prove they can get it done in the tourney. Last year's team was upset in the first round, they did not make it to the tourney in 2007 and were also bounced in the first round in 2006. The question on everyone's mind is if this team can shake off the past and advance to play in the big games. It will not be easy with Hastings, Concordia, College of Idaho and Cornerstone in their bracket.
Upset Alert: Taylor over Concordia. The Trojans have had a lot of big games this year and a tourney win would not be too far fetched of a dream.
Cinderella: Hastings College. There are not many times a team with the history of Hastings can be considered to be a Cinderella but this year's squad has that feel given the fact they are the #5 seed in their bracket. If they can get past COI (which will be tough) they could knock off Shawnee State in a Friday morning game.
Champion: I have a hard time picking someone to beat Shawnee. There are lots of Cinderella stories and great teams in this bracket but I just get the feeling that this is the year Shawnee gets back on track.
Semifinals:
Morningside defeats Northwestern: This game will be a classic battle between these two rivals. Giving the potential draw for this game, I'm sure the tournament organizers and the NAIA would love to have this game happen.
Shawnee State defeats Ozarks: Both teams are going to have a very tough road to make it to the semifinals. If they make it to the Monday night contest I would lean towards Shawnee State having more in the tank to get the victory.
Finals:
Morningside over Shawnee State: The Mustangs have beaten the best teams in the best conference all season long. I see them staying perfect in the tourney.
