Jackson, Tenn. - History was not on its side, but second-seeded Vanguard (Calif.) University became the NAIA's first-ever Division I Women's Basketball National Champion from the state of California, defeating sixth-seeded Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University, 72-59, in Tuesday's national title game.

"The first thing I thought about when we won tonight was how many phone calls I got today from all of our past players, even the players we brought out for our program's first national tournament (in 1998)," said Vanguard head coach Russ Davis, the 2008 NAIA Coach of the Year. "This win was special for all the players who had been here before and last year's seniors, because they built this program up to the point where we could get to this point where we could win a national championship."

JACKSON, Tenn. - The No. 2 seeded Vanguard (Calif.) University Lions advanced to play in their first NAIA National Title game after a 74-72 win over No. 1 seed, and previously unbeaten Union (Tenn.) University. Vanguard's Melissa Cook recorded the game-winner on a driving lay-up six seconds left to break a 72-72 tie.

Vanguard's appearance in the title game also marks the first time a team from the state of California has ever played for an NAIA title.

Vanguard opened the game with six straight points on back-to-back three pointers from Lauren Gregory. Union responded with three straight field goals to tie the game at 6-6. However, Vanguard controlled the lead for the remainder of the half. The Lions stretched the lead to up to 10 points on three different occasions, with the latest coming 34-24 with 8:09 left in the first half. Union rallied to cut the Vanguard lead down to five points, 40-35, but failed to score on three straight possessions with a chance to get closer. JACKSON, Tenn. - Sixth-seeded Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University extended its deepest national tournament run all the way to the program's first-ever NAIA title game with a 69-59 victory over TranSouth Athletic Conference rival Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University in the semifinals of the 28th Annual NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship.

"Before the season I said this might be our most talented team," said Trevecca Nazarene head coach Gary Van Atta. "Not many people believed me and maybe not even the team. They do now because this team has worked hard and overcome some tough losses against good teams early in the season. We have played our best defense of the season this week and it has made a difference."

Two sets of back-to-back three-pointers helped lift the Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene to the victory. Freshman forward K.C. Van Atta and sophomore guard Christian Gibson hit from long distance on consecutive possessions, part of a 16-0 run that spanned less than four minutes to give the Trojans a 26-10 lead with 9:42 to play. Freed-Hardeman battle back to within seven points at halftime, trailing just 36-29 at the break, and the Lady Lions scored the first two baskets of the second half to cut the lead to 36-33 with 17:22 to play in the game.

University Lady Bulldogs, the No. 1 overall seed in the 28th Annual NAIA DI Women's Basketball National Championships, remained perfect on the season with an 82-57 win over No. 3 seed Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) College. The win for Union advances them to their fourth straight semifinal round and ninth semifinal in program history.

Union scored first in the game to take a 2-0 lead on a basket from sophomore Kaitlin Dudley. Lewis-Clark State quickly answered with four straight points to take a 4-2 lead. The Warriors of Lewis-Clark State cut the Union lead down to one point mid-way through the first half, but the Lady Bulldogs never relinquished the lead. With 5:21 left in the first half, Union's Dudley completed a three-point-play to put Union up by double figures for the first time in the game. This play was in the midst of a 23-4 run that helped the Union lead balloon to 20 points, 34-14 with 2:57 left in the half. JACKSON, Tenn. - The No. 3 seeded Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) Warriors kept their season alive by defeating No. 7 seed Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College 73-61. This win puts Lewis Clark State in the quarterfinals for the fourth time in program history and first since 2001.

Lewis-Clark State scored the first three points of the game on their way to a 10-point first half lead, 15-5 at the 12:29 mark of the first half. Lindsey Wilson, who had upset No. 2 seed Oklahoma Baptist in the first round, proved they still had upsets on their mind. The Blue Raiders posted a 12-2 run to cut the lead down to two points, 19-17 with 8:09 left. Lindsey Wilson stayed close, but couldn't seem to take the lead. That was until a basket from Viktoria Krell with 2:31 left in the half put the Blue Raiders up, 27-25.

However, the lead would be short-lived as Lewis-Clark State closed the half with four straight points to take a 29-27 halftime lead.

That 30 second lead for Lindsey Wilson proved to be their only lead of the contest. The first nine minutes of the second half was played very close as Lewis-Clark State managed only a one-point lead, 44-43 with 11 minutes to play. However, over the next three minutes, the Warriors were finally able to pad the lead with a 10-0 run. The Warriors stretched the lead to as many as 14 before the game ended with a 73-61 win.

JACKSON, Tenn. - There will be a new champion for the 2008 season as the No. 3 seed and defending champion Lambuth (Tenn.) University fell to No. 2 seed Vanguard (Calif.) University. The win for Vanguard puts them in the quarterfinals for the sixth straight season, while the loss for Lambuth ends their six-game national tournament winning streak.

In a game that featured four ties and five lead changes, Lambuth (24-10) jumped out to a 6-4 lead with 17:19 left in the half. Vanguard (26-5) answered by posting a 14-0 run over the next six minutes. The Lady Eagles of Lambuth finally snapped the six-minute drought with a basket from Donna Lavea. That basket sparked Lambuth as the Lady Eagles slowly started to cut into the Vanguard lead. Lambuth closed the half with a 13-4 run over the final four minutes to make the halftime deficit just one, 36-35.

Vanguard opened the second half with a 12-3 run to take a 12-point lead, 50-38, with 14:02 left in the game. But Lambuth did not let the game get out of hand as they mounted a rally that propelled the defending champs from 12 points down, to a four-point lead. A 22-6 run over the span of seven minutes had the Lambuth team back in control of the game with a 62-58 lead. However, Vanguard flexed their tournament muscle with a game-deciding 8-0 run to go back up by four points.

The Lady Eagles were not finished yet, as a three pointer form Chytearra Kintchen gave the Lady Eagles life. However, a field-goal by Vanguard's Melissa Cook put the Lady Lions up by three points again, 68-65. Lambuth had the ball down by three when Kintchen was fouled on a three-point attempt with nine seconds left. She missed the first free-throw but sank the final two. After a Lambuth timeout, Vanguard broke the press before Lambuth could foul and a basket from Lauren Gregory sealed the 70-67 win.

JACKSON, Tenn. - Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) University used a 42-point second half to post a 60-41 win over No. 8 seed Robert Morris (Ill.) College. Of the four No. 1 seeds, Point Loma Nazarene joins Union (Tenn.) and Lee (Tenn.) as the three top seeds to advance to the second round. Oklahoma City was the only 1-seed to fall in round one.

After a very low scoring first half for both teams, Point Loma Nazarene (29-2) outscored Robert Morris 42-26 in the second half to pull away for the win.

Point Loma Nazarene had just two players in double figures, Kerra Sutton-Wodarski and Angela Manjarrez with 11 and 10 points respectively. However, 11 of the Sea Lion players broke into the scoring column.

The first half proved to be a poor shooting exhibition from both teams. Point Loma Nazarene shot just 18-percent from the field and made just one three pointer, while Robert Morris didn't fair much better with 24-percent from the field and 0-of-7 from three-point range.

The tournament record for fewest points in a game is 31, held by Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) from 1998. The record for fewest combined points in a game is 85, set back in 2004. Both records were in jeopardy as the halftime score was just 18-15, in favor of the Sea Lions.
